Why the Christian Petracca Trade is Exactly What Gold Coast SUNS Needed
The Gold Coast SUNS have pulled off their biggest recruitment coup since Gary Ablett Jr, securing four-time All-Australian Christian Petracca on the final day of the 2025 trade period.
The 29-year-old premiership star becomes a Sun after 11 seasons at Melbourne, bringing with him a resume that includes a Norm Smith Medal, dual best and fairest wins, and 212 games of elite-level experience.
For eight years, Petracca was a nightmare for Gold Coast. He faced the SUNS 10 times for 10 wins by an average margin of 49 points, racking up 28 possessions per game and kicking 12 goals along the way. That all changed in 2025 when the SUNS finally got the better of Melbourne twice. Now, they won't have to worry about facing him at all.
The trade wasn't cheap. Gold Coast parted with picks 7, 8, and 37 in this year's draft, plus their 2026 first-rounder and a 2027 third-round selection to get the deal done. In return, they landed Petracca along with picks 24 and 28 this year and Melbourne's 2026 second-round pick.
Gold Coast general manager of player talent and strategy Craig Cameron made it clear that Petracca fits exactly what the club was hunting for during the trade period.
"One of our goals throughout the trade period was to add high-quality, experienced players to our evolving list, and Christian is a player that we think can really complement the group we have," Cameron said.
"Christian will add to our midfield group and has the ability to go forward, attributes we feel are an important addition to our squad as we look to take the next step on-field in 2026."
Petracca's numbers speak for themselves. Since 2020, he's polled 125 Brownlow votes, trailing only Lachie Neale, Patrick Cripps, and Marcus Bontempelli. He's collected three votes 27 times in the past six years and finished inside the top six of the medal count four times.
His 2021 grand final performance remains the stuff of legend. Petracca equalled Simon Black's record with 39 disposals in Melbourne's drought-breaking premiership win, claiming the Norm Smith Medal in the process. He also won Melbourne's best and fairest in 2020 and 2023, finished runner-up three times, and was the club's leading goal kicker in 2019.
The move to Queensland represents a fresh start for Petracca after a difficult 2024. He suffered a lacerated spleen, punctured lung, and four fractured ribs in a collision during a game against Collingwood, an injury so severe he couldn't walk further than his hallway for a month and lost 7.5 kilograms. He bounced back to play all 23 games in 2025, proving his durability and commitment.
For the SUNS, Petracca's arrival couldn't be better timed. Coming off their first finals campaign and with a brutal 2026 draw ahead, adding a player of his calibre gives them genuine midfield firepower to compete with the league's best. Pairing him with Touk Miller and the emerging young core transforms the SUNS from promising upstarts into legitimate threats.
With 4,995 career possessions and 202 goals across his 212 games, Petracca is on the verge of joining the exclusive 5,000-possession club. He'll likely reach that milestone early in his first season wearing the red and gold.
It's the kind of statement signing that changes the conversation around a football club. The SUNS aren't just building anymore. They're ready to compete.
